The Lesson In Improving Conversations: My 3 Biggest Tips
Friday Dec 23, 2022
Friday Dec 23, 2022
EP288: In this week's "Lessons Learned" episode I share my 3 biggest tips to improving conversations that I've learned in my coaching training.
I always thought I was a good conversationalist until I went through my coaching certification. Wow, was that an eye-opener!!!
I learned my conversations were more about me trying to get my voice heard and give my opinions and/or advice vs. me wanting to connect with the other person and making sure they felt heard and valued.
Or if I was trying to connect, I wasn't doing it with the intention of making the person I was talking to feel heard and seen. It was with the intent of ME being seen and heard! :(
Sounds kind of awful, doesn't it? But now I know why, and if you'd like to know more about that, check out last week's episode (Episode 286), where I share a childhood trauma I uncovered that explains everything!
As I was thinking about what topics to cover as we head into the holidays, I thought about all of the conversations that will likely be happening at parties and at family gatherings, and how nice it would be if you could learn how to better connect with the people you talk to.
But be careful because you might become the most popular person at the party once you learn how to master these tips. 😜

The Lesson In Uncovering A Childhood Trauma
Friday Dec 16, 2022
Friday Dec 16, 2022
EP286: In this week's "Lessons Learned" episode I get super vulnerable as I share a breakthrough I had at an intimate retreat I attended in Sedona this past week with my amazing coach. And yes, per the episode title, it's about a childhood trauma that I uncovered. (This is also a great example of why everyone needs a coach, even coaches need coaches!!!)
Most humans, if normal, have some kind of trauma from childhood that is carried forward into adulthood. Some traumas are actually even passed along from previous generations by our ancestors which is a topic I'm just starting to delve into and will talk about in a future episode... But today I'm talking about a trauma that occurred 55 years ago when I was 8 years old.
The trauma was triggered by an event and subsequent thoughts that became obsessive and controlled my daily life. Over time, as I aged, those thoughts that had led to coping rituals, were pushed down into my subconscious and tucked away until now.
But what I've learned and know to be true is that our past still affects our present, even if we aren't consciously aware of it. I know this, I teach it, and, as a coach, I help people discover these things. But I was completely blind to this forgotten trauma and how it was still impacting me.
All I knew is that something was holding me back from truly stepping into my limitless potential and what I know I am here to do. Something was in my way and I wanted to get to the bottom of it.
What's funny is that it's something I thought I had conquered, but the truth is, I hadn't uncovered this memory that needed to be dealt with.
One of the big lessons which I didn't share on the episode because I didn't think of it until I began writing this episode summary is that, we'll never conquer our humanness. And we should not want to - ever! We are amazing and complex beings and we just need to accept that we are a work-in-progress, always growing and making new discoveries.
And if we can find the awe and acceptance in that, we will live a very happy and contented life.

How Paws Have Provided New Purpose, with Annie Leo
Tuesday Dec 13, 2022
Tuesday Dec 13, 2022
EP285: This week’s guest is Annie Leo, the founder of “Paws for Change”, a registered Australian charity who opened Bali's first senior specific safe house for rescue dogs and offers rehabilitation and mobility facilities for special needs dogs.
Annie started this charity as a passion project after her relationship with her long time partner ended, along with her job because she worked for him. Interestingly, a Facebook post she saw kicked off her new purpose in life.
In this episode, Annie and I talk about:
- The Facebook post that caused her to take one small step that changed her life.
- How her purpose evolved from curiosity to starting her own charity.
- How she started her ‘Paws for Change’ non-profit.
- Virtual dog adoption.
Annie believes that we all have a purpose and something important to give. Dogs are a life-long passion and now her second half purpose but she’s convinced that everyone has some kind of passion that will light their own unique spark. She also believes that if something is bothering you, you should make an effort to change it because no matter how insignificant you think it will be, it will make a difference.
One of her realizations from starting this dog rescue journey at the age of 50 is that everything in her life happened for a reason and added up to her being exactly where she’s meant to be, at the right time it’s meant to be.
“Sometimes you just have to trust the journey.” - Annie Leo

[JFDI #9] When Your Body Is Sending Warning Signals
Friday Dec 09, 2022
Friday Dec 09, 2022
EP284: I was excited to bring you this episode where I talk about some non-conventional healing modalities that I've recently learned about - things that most western medicine doctors won't suggest or prescribe because, unfortunately, it's not what they're taught and it's not what pays their bills.
I made this a part of my Just Friggin' Do It series because I finally got serious about my health after over 3 years of dealing with mysterious stomach issues that can't be explained by my primary care doctor,
I was first pointed down this path by Christie Miller, a health coach, who I had on my podcast in June 2020 (See Episode 39). What's interesting is that even though Christie is a Health coach, she openly admits that she wasn't living a healthy lifestyle, and in early July found herself sitting in an oncologist's office being told she had an aggressive form of breast cancer.
So Christie went into action-mode which was researching everything she could about cancer, the treatment protocol her doctor was recommending, and talking to cancer survivors. Then she decided she was going to document her journey and start a blog and that's what caught my eye...
I saw her post a link to her blog on social media and I clicked through to read it out of curiosity. This is what I call a nudge from the universe. Nudges often begin with interest... something that's placed in front of you that makes you want to learn more.
After I read through Christie's first 2 blog posts, I felt my intuition screaming at me to check out the things she was sharing. At that moment, I decided it was time to just friggin' do it... to make good health a top priority and begin the process to solve my long term stomach issues.
So, in this episode, I'm sharing the things I've started doing to PREVENT cancer because I had a strong feeling after reading Christy's experience that I was headed down a similar path if I didn't make some serious lifestyle changes. My body has been sending me all the signals for 3+ years and I haven't been taking them seriously.
I talk about:
- IV Ozone therapy, what it is and my experience with it.
- Juicing and the concoction I've been drinking every day for almost 2 weeks.
- The top anti-cancer supplements.
- Chris Wark, survivor of Stage 3c colon cancer and his Square One program.
I'll be having Christie back on my podcast soon. She wants to share her story and I'm excited to give her this platform to do so.
And like I said on the episode, if either you or a close friend or family member is struggling with cancer, it's YOUR journey to navigate and you must pick what works for you and allow your friend or family member to choose theirs. We must be supportive of each other and not try to force what we think is right on someone else.
What I believe is most important is that we share information we come across that may be helpful so that people have the knowledge they need to make the best decision for them.
So my hope is that this episode is both informative - that it makes you stop and think about your lifestyle and where it might be leading you - and that it provides someone, whether you or someone you love, with options that can really help.
Links for the things I mentioned on the episode are:
- Nama J2 Juicer
- Berkley water filter (I got the "Big Berkey")
- Aloe Vera
- Phresh Green powder
- Amala
- Moringa
- Beta Glucan
- Apricot Seed capsules
- Chris Wark's website: https://www.chrisbeatcancer.com/
- Square One: Chris Wark's Healing Cancer Coaching Program
If you know someone who is battling cancer, or struggling with their health like me, and will benefit from this information, please share it. Don't withhold it because you have your own opinion about it. Share it and let them decide.

How Rewiring Your Thoughts Can Save A Marriage, with Jill Romig
Tuesday Dec 06, 2022
Tuesday Dec 06, 2022
EP283: This week’s guest is Jill Romig who helps women redefine what aging means to them so that they authentically embrace their second half. She loves to see women show up confidently with style, grace, and elegance without apology, shame, or regret. Recently, Jill has focused on working with women on their relationships.
In this episode, Jill and I talked about:
- How she stumbled upon the world of personal development and how it completely changed her life.
- Her early years of struggle as a widow and single mom on government assistance.
- Her rocky relationship with her 2nd husband that almost led to divorce
- Her late-in-life pivot from being a full time CPA to life coaching and how she’s using the lessons she’s learned to save rocky relationships.
It may take two to tango, but it only takes one to lead, and that’s what Jill did. She waltzed her way back into the kind of relationship that she wanted and came out with a renewed perspective of what is possible and how important our thoughts control the outcomes in our lives.
Jill is a certified life coach, very happily married, and very passionate about helping other women who struggle in their marriages regardless of the reason. She helps women find their voice, face the uncomfortable and let their inner confident self shine.

The Lesson In The Four Agreements (Part 4 of 4)
Friday Dec 02, 2022
Friday Dec 02, 2022
EP282: This is the 4th and final episode of my 4 part series on the 4 agreements that I learned from the book "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom" by Don Miguel Ruiz.
This episode covers the 4th agreement which is: Always do your best.
And like the other agreements, it sounds simple, but it's multi-layered - what you may think it means, well, there's more to it!
Even though I had listened to the book on Audible and was aware of the 4 agreements, I clearly had forgotten the lesson of this one because as I re-listened to it in preparation for this series, I realized that I was feeling guilty about something I didn't do this week, which, if you are really living by this 4th agreement, guilt is an indicator you are NOT doing your best.
It helped the seed of this agreement, that was planted when I first heard it, grow even deeper in my psyche in that I will be more aware that saying no for certain reasons IS doing my best.
I hope hearing this 4th agreement gives you a new perspective about what doing your best really means and helps you see how ACTION is the only way to build the new habits of these 4 agreements.

Moving Past The Middle With Moxie, with Amy Lang
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
Tuesday Nov 29, 2022
EP281: This week’s episode is with Amy Lang, the CEO of Moxie Club and host of the “Happy & Healthy with Amy” podcast. She specializes in working with your brain and body to create joyful eating and deep health. Amy is also known as the Habit Whisperer, with a passion to help people stay motivated and build self-care habits so they can show up as their most empowered, authentic self.
In 2019, before the pandemic hit, Amy decided to close her successful health club business she’d been operating for over 15 years and pivot to her newfound passion: health coaching.. She launched her first online group coaching program in April 2020, right at the time when brick and mortar health clubs were shutting down due to Covid.
In this episode, Amy and I talked about:
- How she pivoted from a career in the corporate world, working at companies like Arthur Andersen, Oracle, Netscape and Yahoo, into the world of fitness as a health club owner, and finally moving to her latest passion, at age 53, as a health coach.
- Why she named her business “Moxie Club”.
- What does being a “Habit Whisperer” mean?
- What is ‘joyful eating’ and tips on how to change your eating habits
Over time Amy realized that having a fitness trainer made a huge difference for people who wanted to get fit, but she saw that the nutrition aspect got in the way of lasting weight loss. This led her to get the credentials she needed in nutrition coaching and dive into helping people shift their mindset around creating healthy habits.
Now, she’s passionately helping women who are tired of dieting and don't enjoy working out to figure out how to create a healthy lifestyle so they can feel better, have more confidence and live the life they want.

The Lesson In The Four Agreements (Part 3 of 4)
Sunday Nov 27, 2022
Sunday Nov 27, 2022
EP280: This is Part 3 of my 4 part series on the 4 agreements I learned about in the book "The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide To Personal Freedom" by Don Miguel Ruiz.
This episode covers the 3rd agreement which is: Don't make assumptions.
This is something we all do as it's how the human mind works. But if we begin to recognize when we're making assumptions and realize how they are creating emotional poison in our lives, we can transform the way we communicate with others and thus transform our lives.
In this episode, I share a couple of personal examples from my past as well as an exercise about assumptions that show how easy it is to make them.
I hope hearing this 3rd agreement gives you a new perspective about how often and unconsciously assumptions are made and helps you see the #1 action you can take that will help eliminate them.
