EP98: This is the Part 2 of my fun conversation with Lisa and Sam Chiodo. In this segment, we talk all about Italy and I was excited to share some of my memories of a 2012 trip to Tuscany with my husband, 2 globe-trotting friends, and my recently engaged daughter and her fiance. I must say, this was a fantastic trip down the memory lane!
If you missed Part 1, check it out here: https://notyouraveragegrandma.podbean.com/e/part-1-the-fearless-family-who-gave-up-everything-for-the-italian-life/
In this second segment, it was interesting to learn more about how the couple uprooted their family and immersed themselves in a very different environment where there were massive cultural and language differences.
It gives us the sense that, although we come from different places and speak different languages, we are all so similar and connected. And it also made me realize that when we hear of stories like Lisa's and Sam's, it inspires us to explore different people and cultures more. I'm not sure about you, but I'm ready for another Italian adventure!!!
If you'd like to check out the paid workshop we talked about that the Chiodos have coming up, you can register here: https://www.lifemappingitaly.com/workshop/
If you're interested in booking your own Italian adventure, I highly recommend including Girosole, the company that did the self-guided walking tour I went on, as part of your research: https://www.girosole.com/tours/ There are many different tour options to choose from.

EP97: What a fun episode!!! I got to chat with Lisa Chiodo and although totally unplanned and unexpected, her husband popped in and joined our conversation. That's what happens when you see people having fun - you want to join in!!!
Although Lisa had visited Italy in her younger years before marriage and had even had a little internal nudging that she wanted to live there, it wasn't until she and her husband were at a seminar, and the speaker asked the audience what they really wanted to do with their life, that the idea took shape.
When that question came, they both leaned forward at the same time looking at each other and said "ITALY!" Then they went home, had the Australian equivalent of what we call a garage sale in the U.S. and sold all of their belongings, packed their clothes and their 2 young children, ages 1 and 3, and moved to Italy - for the first time.
At age 41, Lisa, along with her husband Sam and their children, uprooted their life and moved to a brand new country, without a real plan, other than to buy a camper, once they got to Italy. After a couple of years, they moved back to Australia, but the longing for Italy was too great so about 5 years later they packed up everything once again, and at age 49, they moved their family to Italy for good.
Lisa and Sam have now created Renovating Italy where they share their life living in a medieval Borgata at the foot of the Alps in Northern Italy. Together, with their now teenaged children, they love their simple life living way outside the box.
What they want others to know is that it IS possible to pick up and have a life change even with young children and limited funds. After losing everything in a recession, they googled the cheapest house in Piemonte and bought it for just 8 thousand euro. They quit the rat race TWICE, and now grow their own food, keep animals, and live very simply.

5 Ways You Could Be Doing Affirmations Wrong
Friday Feb 26, 2021
Friday Feb 26, 2021
EP95: I was one of those people who did affirmations every day but I never knew that, while they made me feel good, they weren't really effective in changing the way I thought... until I was trained in the neuroscience behind how our brains work and discovered these 5 tricks that would CHANGE EVERYTHING!!!
So here's the deal.... I don't want you to waste your time doing "feel good" affirmations that aren't effective. I mean, if you're already spending the time listening or writing them every day, then heck, don't you want to make that time investment as effective as possible.
Affirmations that aren't addressing these five mistakes are like the fad diet you go on to lose weight. You might get a temporary "feel good" fix that fools you into thinking the changes are permanent but very soon, everything reverts back to where you were before you started.
And I don't want that for you!
So here are my tips written down but be sure to listen to this episode for the examples because examples are the real teachers!!!
Tip #1: Always make your affirmation in the present tense as if it is already happening in your life. If you have the word "will" in your affirmation, you are making mistake #1. Change "I will" to "I am."
Tip #2: Remove all instances of negative words or phrases of what you want to remove or get rid of in your life. The universe can't distinguish negative from positive so if you are trying to free yourself from judgement or lose weight, then create an affirmation that speaks to what you'd like to gain instead. What are the feelings you want that come with no judgement and weight loss? Affirm that and the behavior you are committing to that will make that happen!
Tip #3: Don't ask for permission in your affirmations. Affirmations are statements that are positive and empowering. Asking for permission is not an empowered state, even if you are asking God. The truth is God will always say Yes because he wants you to have whatever it is you desire so step into that!
Tip #4: Attack your negative thought head on! If you try to gloss over the negative thought with some "nice to hear" affirmation, it won't work. The example I shared by one of my students in this episode is perfect! Her affirmations was a positive statement about her being proud of the daughter she raised yet her negative thought was about THEIR RELATIONSHIP.
I call this a "round about" affirmation, and these will never work. The affirmation MUST be the direct opposite of the negative thought, so in this case, I helped her create an affirmation to affirm the relationship she desires to have. And I am confident, as long as she follows the process I teach, it is already done!
Tip #5: Your affirmations aren't about rewiring someone else's brain. They are only about rewiring yours so if you have any affirmations about your spouse or child and they are affirming behavior you desire for them, that won't work!
You can only control YOUR THOUGHTS! So if it's a relationship that you care about and want to improve, find affirmations that help you focus on the positive aspects of that person. If it's a relationship where you feel unheard or unappreciated, create affirmations that empower you to speak your truth and that reinforce your awareness that others have their own truths which might be different than yours. THAT is what you can control!
If this training episode has helped you, we'd love a 5 star rating and a review would be awesome too!

EP94: My latest guest, Debra Johnstone, shares two major midlife transformations on today's episode that I'm sure will inspire you.
Debra was 49 when a calling that she could no longer deny, led her to making a major career change. This calling was a nudge she had had earlier in her life but which she suppressed for all of the same reasons many of us ignore whispers we get from the universe: it's SCARY and we don't know where to begin!
But as she neared her 50th birthday, the whisper became too loud to ignore! So she took the first step to begin her research about coaching. And surprise!!! An old email that she had saved had everything she needed to take her next step.
As a result of that first step, Debra has creating a successful coaching business called "Transformational Pathways Australia" and created her signature program "Mindset 4 Business Success" along with her signature product called "Your Success Planner."
She speaks on stage and has been providing transformational coaching for several years now, but her second midlife transformation came as the result of her father's death. This was the turning point where she fully stepped in to her desire to focus on helping people at midlife.
She calls herself a MidLife Transition Mentor and is a practitioner in NeuroLinguistic Programming who works with entrepreneurs and corporate professionals to achieve levels of success and freedom they want and deserve.
I loved getting to know Debra and hearing her journey. We have so much in common as we are both high energy, super spunky, and positive, and we both have a passion for helping women recognize their inner brilliance which they have likely suppressing and love showing them how to tap into it so they can live the rest of their lives shining bright.
As Debra's story proves, when you step into your brilliance and who you are meant to be in the world, amazing opportunities and adventures unfold, regardless of your age or where you are in life!

Reflections On My 61st Year
Monday Feb 15, 2021
Monday Feb 15, 2021
EP93: Happy Anniversary to Not Your Average Lives and Happy Birthday to me!!!
Today's podcast was inspired by my look back at the last 12 months. We typically tend to forget our accomplishments and focus on what we didn't get done so one of my regular mindset practices is to celebrate my accomplishments every single month and document them.
So the exercise of looking back over the past 12 months was not too hard because I had it all written down, but it still amazes me because my natural inclination, which is pretty common for most of us, is to think I didn't do enough.
What also amazes me is that what I ended up accomplishing in my 61st year changed so much from what I set out to accomplish, and even so, it turned out to be my best year yet! And I know that's because I kept following my gut!!!
The older I get, the more aligned I become in what I know I'm here to do and the happier I become as a result of that which results in a deeper conviction in helping others find their unique reason for being, because I know, as a late in life purpose-finder, that I am evidence that deeper fulfillment can be found no matter how old you are!
The books I mentioned in this episode that were the most impactful this year are:
- Happy Pocket Full of Money
- Life Visioning: A Transformative Process for Activating Your Unique Gifts and Highest Potential
- Journey of Souls: Case Studies of Life Between Lives
If you read one or more of these and it impacts you, please reach out and share your experience with me. I'd love to hear about it!

EP92: In this episode, I get to catch up with a friend so it's a bit different than most of my interviews. We cover a lot of topics, some sad and some happy. But that's life, right?! We never know when a phone call will change everything, and that's what happened to my guest Amber Lawrence, in late 2019.
You'll learn a lot about Amber, who opens up about dropping everything to make sure her mom was taken care of in her last days, while also running her online business as an Essential Oils Expert.
Amber is proof that you CAN make massive adjustments quickly to adapt to the curveballs life throws at you. And you'll hear how she's currently living a minimalist lifestyle, traveling around the US in her RV with her husband and 2 Dachshunds! How cool is that?!
I met Amber back in my Beachbody Coaching days and she lit up my online "challenge" group with so much energy and spunkiness. I loved her from the get-go!!!
And as I got to know her better, I learned she had a deep love of essential oils. And ultimately I realized that oils were her passion, the thing that she's meant to do in the world, because oils have changed her life.
In this episode she talks about how she suffered with allergies from a very young age and how, at midlife, essential oils saved her. She shares valuable tips about the benefits of oils and how they have helped her with overall vitality and health. She also shares the heartbreaking story about how she ended up on her RV journey with her husband.
I'm sure this episode will give you an energy boost and teach you a bit about oils, and maybe it will even spark an idea about an obstacle you've overcome that you could help others with.

Inaction Is A Form Of Action
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
Thursday Feb 04, 2021
EP91: This topic came to me as I was lying in bed this morning thinking about the women who have been in my "Ignite Your Second Half Soul" training and are soooo ready to stop settling for what they don't want and begin taking action on what they DO want.
But like so many of us, it's easier to see the obstacles than the opportunities. I see many hesitating on going ALL IN on my program "The Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School," and some have even sent me emails explaining why they can't, because they have found some obstacle that is bigger than their ability to see the unknowns.
And the funny thing is... THAT is what my program will help them do!!! SEE OPPORTUNITIES that they can't see for themselves right now.
And I so get that because in this episode I share what was going through MY MIND as I was hesitating on signing up for a book writing program when one of my big goals this year is TO WRITE MY FIRST BOOK.
It's so much easier to listen to our logical brain that always seems to say no to our heart's desires and we think that is inaction but it's really just another form of action because we end up filling that time on To Dos that don't take us any closer to our goals. And that's my main beef today! Because I am as guilty as the women I help!!!
And that really bothered me because I know how important it is to practice what I preach...
So once I realized the real choice I was making... choosing inaction on a dream which will only lead to THE WRONG ACTION and more time wasted on writing my first book... I said HELL YES!
So today, as the doors to our 3rd season of "The Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School" are about to close, and I'm thinking of the women who really want to join us, but are choosing the action that likely won't take them any closer to where they want to go, I just hope something they hear, from me in my training or in one of my emails or from one of my sparked students, will give them the courage to say YES before enrollment closes at midnight PST tonight (2/4/21).

EP90: For the first time, I have three guests on at once! And what fun it was!!! They are women who I've gotten to know very well over the past 3 months as they just recently graduated from my Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School.
Today's episode is a conversation with Kim Jarzinsky, Sandy Stalmach, and Janice Lee who shared their experience over the past 90 days as they transformed from stuck, passionless, and in some cases, very depressed, empty nesters into Sparked Second Half Souls, now living from a very lit up place and more connected to who they are than they've been in a long time.
Listen in as they look back on their biggest AHA moments, key turning points and self discoveries from their recent transformational experience now that they've stepped into who they are meant to be.
They also talk about how valuable the support system was to their growth and how much they learned from the like-minded sisterhood and the friendships that developed through the process all because they finally got fed up enough to take control and stop settling back in October.
If you're ready to stop settling, get into the Second Half S.P.A.R.K. School NOW. Doors are open from Monday, 2/1/21 through Thursday, 2/4/21. Go to www.notyouraveragegrandma.com/sparkschool and enroll before the doors close.
Don't waste another minute putting off the transformation you desire and deserve. (If the doors are closed by the time you read this, you can use the same link above and get on the waitlist so you don't miss out the next time we open.)

The Uncomfortable Truth About Silence
Thursday Jan 28, 2021
Thursday Jan 28, 2021
EP89: In today's episode I talk about the importance of adding silence into your life, especially if your life is consumed by an overflowing task list and you have a hard time sitting down, like the old me. And for those of us who've had the belief that busy = achievement, practicing silence can be downright difficult.
In the episode I also mention the free training I'm currently doing and the impact that a powerful "Future You" visualization I take the participants through is having on them. I share some of the reflections they've given me after going through it and you can tell how its opened up a connection to a deeper part of them.
As I've brought more silence into my life the past couple of years, it has opened up so much clarity and goodness into my life. I believe Silence has given me soul-aligned direction to the path I'm now walking that I realize I couldn't find when I was too busy being busy.
Now I use a variety of tools including, meditation, yoga, journaling, floating (and baths), and visualizations (and more recently breathwork which I totally forgot to mention on the episode!).
I hope this episode inspires you to delve into these "silence tools," get off the hamster wheel of life and learn how to listen to your inner voice.
